I thought I'd just write a new post instead of updating <a href="https://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.com/2013/05/sewing-journal-pages-pdf-download.html" target="_blank">the older one</a> again.</p><p>Pretty much the same as the previous versions, just a few new fields to differentiate the machines.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fIZjcg9j8SI/Xzr_f6PG31I/AAAAAAAAG6Y/em7tT5bKREMSzHUYZea5krf1bQgPdsExgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1351/Sewing%2BJournal_v4.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="871" data-original-width="1351" height="330" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fIZjcg9j8SI/Xzr_f6PG31I/AAAAAAAAG6Y/em7tT5bKREMSzHUYZea5krf1bQgPdsExgCLcBGAsYHQ/w512-h330/Sewing%2BJournal_v4.png" width="512" /></a></div><p>You can download the files here:</p><p><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1o4makacJ6YtDC0TzqgDlTOKkxd_CUYgF/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Sewing Journal_v4.PDF</a></p><p><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1i4RHLd8Q8z6oiPxdwuDkMImQ2bPbU02Y/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Sewing Journal_v4.DOCX</a></p><p><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8300543955786478892.post-35998691069941670202017-03-14T22:55:00.001-04:002017-03-14T22:55:28.640-04:00Copy of RTW Tristan V-neck Pull-on Dress<p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Last year, spring 2016, my mum and I went to Montreal for a weekend shopping trip. It was great! Other than it rained the whole time, so we spent most of our time downtown in the underground shopping malls. But, I did find some great RTW pieces, and one dress from Tristan that screamed COPY ME!!!!</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">So, on my return, I hauled out a knit that I’d bought the previous year in Montreal, which I think is rayon or viscose with spandex (or something along those lines) . Another one of those purchases that I had no idea of what to make with when I bought it but it felt so lovely, and straight to the stash it went.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Here’s the RTW (blue) and Copy side by side. It’s actually the second copy, the first one was a wearable trial, as in I’d wear it camping (did that) or in the back yard only.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WV55jVULT6w/WMitBZBiO_I/AAAAAAAAB-s/O6yq0F1nYZg/s1600-h/PIC_20170302_223146%25255B16%25255D.jpg"><img title="PIC_20170302_223146" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20170302_223146" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JvWussYC6pI/WMitDHOoA7I/AAAAAAAAB-w/oX5kGCqOLCA/PIC_20170302_223146_thumb%25255B18%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="253" height="544"></a> <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wTBqXXyUumM/WMitDZuRB2I/AAAAAAAAB-0/ljke6U19R4k/s1600-h/PIC_20170302_223344%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="PIC_20170302_223344" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20170302_223344" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AOtjbQQPc00/WMitD6dg14I/AAAAAAAAB-4/9OiXEGSbe6g/PIC_20170302_223344_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="248" height="544"></a></font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">This dress is actually two pieces, top and skirt, attached at the waist with an elastic casing and a drawstring. The <a href="https://jalie.com/jalie3352-dolman-top-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">Jalie 3352 dolman top</a> turned out to be a prefect starting point. Using the measurements from the RTW dress, I traced the Jalie pattern and made the following alterations:</font></p> <ul> <li><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Bound V-neck, overlapped at the V (simpler construction)</font> <li><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Shoulder brought up closer to the neck, not so wide as Jalie’s top</font> <li><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Shoulder seams moved forward 2.5 cm</font> <li><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Top length about the same as Jalie’s to form blouson effect, cut straight across</font> <li><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Simple skirt, very slight A-line</font> <li><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">2 buttonholes at the top of the skirt for the drawstrings</font> <li><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Attached strip inside to form the casing for the elastic and drawstring</font></li></ul> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">This is what I use my sewing journal forms for, it’s so handy. I first made the tank top back in May 2015, and then another 2 times (last one needs rebinding). But I’ve also extended it to dress length and made 6 versions (or 7, if I count an early mistake, where I didn’t add width at the hips. !#$%^&*!) You’ll find me wearing these dresses all summer, it’s just so easy to throw this beauty on.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">So, starting with the first top, it’s made from a really lovely navy eyelet jersey that I bought at Darrell Thomas’ in a sale on a whim, and didn’t have a clue what I’d use it for. Honestly, it sat in my stash like a lost soul for over a year, probably longer. I have no idea what made me think of this pattern for it, but I do recall that feeling of Eureka!!</font></p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6rfmfq6nqdQ/WMIYkRxidbI/AAAAAAAAB7g/mDxGWq7j6Nc/s1600-h/PIC_20150918_1350285.jpg"><font size="3" face="Segoe UI"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pDRz2CkfgKo/WMIYlE_9rwI/AAAAAAAAB7k/U8b9Wvy1lgk/s1600-h/PIC_20150918_1350286.jpg"><img title="PIC_20150918_135028" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20150918_135028" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g7EzjhLscJM/WMIYlj-KstI/AAAAAAAAB7o/dLnvNkM-jdw/PIC_20150918_135028_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" width="258" height="475"></a></font> </a><font size="3" face="Segoe UI"> </font><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CxluEOfenl4/WMIYl2Or12I/AAAAAAAAB7s/DmAsyjeBOgE/s1600-h/PIC_20150918_1349486.jpg"><font size="3" face="Segoe UI"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QENEmvenkAc/WMIYmUlrgJI/AAAAAAAAB7w/tjfUBnEfBPk/s1600-h/PIC_20150918_13494811.jpg"><img title="PIC_20150918_134948" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20150918_134948" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m-wQSEzJZ6o/WMIYm7higFI/AAAAAAAAB70/R1nU3C_XznA/PIC_20150918_134948_thumb11.jpg?imgmax=800" width="258" height="475"></a></font></a><font size="3" face="Segoe UI"> </font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">I followed the pattern instructions for the edges and just turned them under, but the neckline had to be shifted up as usual. The navy skirt is another absolute favourite, a Cake patterns Hummingbird. Love it. And in denim it wears so easily. I’ve worn this combination about a hundred times, over 2 summers, and I still love it.</font></p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DsPJ8_mNd1c/WMIYnBC_RuI/AAAAAAAAB74/MUt-VHe3urY/s1600-h/StyleArcDianaTop_NavyEyeletJersey_cl.jpg"><img title="StyleArcDianaTop_NavyEyeletJersey_closeup" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="StyleArcDianaTop_NavyEyeletJersey_closeup" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VyGJ6z0Ma9Y/WMIYnfQNaiI/AAAAAAAAB78/AyOXjNzI1bc/StyleArcDianaTop_NavyEyeletJersey_cl%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="411" height="404"></a></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cndq5CJBi10/WMIYoOhfLTI/AAAAAAAAB8A/1DKPTQgVs9w/s1600-h/PIC_20150918_1346225.jpg"><img title="PIC_20150918_134622" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20150918_134622" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aXQjLHLcoeI/WMIYorQEdXI/AAAAAAAAB8E/dDMs_GayQTg/PIC_20150918_134622_thumb5.jpg?imgmax=800" width="269" height="474"></a></font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">For the red jersey top I bound the edges, it’s OK but I prefer the look of the original finish. This skirt is also a Style Arc, the Fay skirt which is SO FRIGGIN EASY to sew! The design is fabulous, there are 2 layers but it’s one piece, the top one folds under and goes back up to be attached at the elasticated waist, so no need for a slip. The fabric came from Montreal where I went berserk and bought about 15 meters of assorted fabrics at bargain prices, unheard of here in Ottawa. I’ve got loads of this fabric left and will make the dress version for this summer.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">Then the dresses, the first being the same navy eyelet jersey. This looks so elegant, it’s the fabric that does it. In August that same year, I made my funky synthetic version, also Montreal fabric (no idea what that material is, but it’s SO cool all the time, and never static.) Fabulous! I’ve had so many compliments on this dress.</font></p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e6gipORBl4I/WMIYpcn2ffI/AAAAAAAAB8I/E-Ur_iHkgIc/s1600-h/PIC_20150918_132743%25255B1%25255D.jpg"><img title="PIC_20150918_132743" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20150918_132743" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-av6Pz_-McAA/WMIYp3l6ywI/AAAAAAAAB8M/9m6mTnO4xMA/PIC_20150918_132743_thumb%25255B10%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="256" height="471"></a><font size="3" face="Segoe UI"> </font><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2owZ_D5oDjI/WMIYqJyjvoI/AAAAAAAAB8Q/hB_uUju6UAI/s1600-h/PIC_20150918_1338356.jpg"><font size="3" face="Segoe UI"><img title="PIC_20150918_133835" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20150918_133835" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AuScYAFvdBw/WMIYqg31otI/AAAAAAAAB8U/1TDFl2_dWXc/PIC_20150918_133835_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" width="255" height="470"></font></a></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">That fabric’s got a great stretch, I can tuck one side into the waist of my me-made Jalie cycle shorts and bike in it. I’ve been wrapping mine up tightly with a tea towel, like my sister showed me. It just never stayed warm enough, and it was a bit fiddly getting the tea towel on.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">There’s loads of ideas on Etsy, but I wanted something from felted wool. A trip to my local Value Village scored me a large, slightly moth eaten, woollen men’s sweater in neutral coffee tones. The first problem was how to handle holes in the fabric, but after a couple of weeks just letting it stew, I got the idea to make little patches and sew them on. Yeah, this is one happy boy, and he’s had to wait soooo long for this almost UFO to be finished.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g2oNjPbQxuQ/WAk9zcrSlmI/AAAAAAAAB4Y/7oVtmyi-DK4/s1600-h/PIC_20161002_182140%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="PIC_20161002_182140" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 5px 20px 5px 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20161002_182140" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HoIuL_wFyEo/WAk9zwgEbNI/AAAAAAAAB4c/EA_MCWQQCXQ/PIC_20161002_182140_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="263" align="left" height="455"></a></p> <p>This costume jumpsuit is a modified Burda Style pattern, it’s actually a <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/astronaut-long-jumpsuit-012012" target="_blank">spacesuit pattern</a> from way back to January 2012. But Henry wanted an army costume with large pockets on the legs and up on top, similar to a RTW police costume that he’s had for years but is now just too small to get into.</p> <p>All the main pieces were cut out and ready to go, but I didn’t have anything for the pockets. And so it lingered on my sewing work table, since before last Christmas. Not good! Eventually a search through my stash of Burda magazines yielded the right stuff.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fE2RrF47x4U/WA40J8VQ8TI/AAAAAAAAB5M/Zvgy8dws518/s1600-h/BS_01-2012-144_technical_large%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="BS_01-2012-144_technical_large" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="BS_01-2012-144_technical_large" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9SX-efpKsFg/WA40KFKPZmI/AAAAAAAAB5Q/lD7F05MjFSk/BS_01-2012-144_technical_large_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="531" height="420"></a></p> <p>The large billows pockets and flaps on the legs are from a boy’s shorts pattern, <a href="http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/childrens-bermuda-shorts-42010" target="_blank">Burda Style 04-2010-131</a>. They have a separate piece (long strip) sewn around the sides and bottom to add volume, and were actually really easy to assemble. I’ll keep this pocket pattern for future makes. I know, it’s really hard to see it on these pics. So much camo.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VJI9EkwrnaY/WAk90N9371I/AAAAAAAAB4g/fpsZjlmF_90/s1600-h/PIC_20161002_18215812.jpg"><img title="PIC_20161002_182158" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20161002_182158" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r1smnC9g_Gk/WAk90axMP3I/AAAAAAAAB4k/2Dvt9vSI55M/PIC_20161002_182158_thumb6.jpg?imgmax=800" width="264" height="492"></a> <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AJ9nqCYxq_w/WAk903psEzI/AAAAAAAAB4o/gWL9OnqfAi4/s1600-h/PIC_20161002_1822097.jpg"><img title="PIC_20161002_182209" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="PIC_20161002_182209" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5FJNXQ2En24/WAk91If5NcI/AAAAAAAAB4s/kyesCpftvPI/PIC_20161002_182209_thumb4.jpg?imgmax=800" width="263" height="492"></a></p> <p>All the pocket flaps are held down with Velcro instead of the buttons that the shorts pattern used. The flaps are the same design as for the leg pockets, but I didn’t use a pattern for the pocket itself, just copied the pocket from his existing RTW police costume. This does not have the long side strip, I just made it a box by sewing the corners. They’re not as neat, and it turned out to be harder to sew to the suit.</p> <p>All in all this jumpsuit was a pretty good pattern to use as the base. I can see this one being used for other types of costumes.</p> <p>So after a long weekend last month sewing it all together, I’ve made one boy really happy! And another project off my table. Win for everyone.</p></font>Steph Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049714887862407863noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8300543955786478892.post-482468299865174832016-10-17T13:54:00.001-04:002016-10-24T14:35:24.626-04:00Pencil Case for the Boys<p><font size="3" face="Segoe UI">My sewing repertoire has been expanding now that the boys are getting older. Where does time go? Holy cow, next week it’s May already!! At least spring has F I N A L L Y arrived in Ottawa, man it was a long winter.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">So, with May comes the Ottawa Race Weekend and I’ve signed up for the 5K again. And for this race I’m sewing some new running gear, which has been on my To Do list for ages.</font></p> <p><font face="Calibri"><font size="4">Four years ago </font><a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2010/05/jalie-2796-skort.html"><font size="4">I made</font></a><font size="4"> the Jalie 2796 Skort, which I always wear in warm weather. It’s great, but I want some funkier stuff. I’ll blog details about this very soon, as I’ve only just started today. But, while I was testing out the various serger stitch settings for the lycra fabric I realized that I already did this for the first skort (same fabric, different colour). Of course, I couldn’t find the stitch samples with my notes. Not surprising since I’ve rearranged my sewing room 3 or 4 times since! </font></font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">Here’s a pic of what I came up with.</font></p> <p><font size="4"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-3hKAb51XZT8/U1sjlau9p-I/AAAAAAAABr8/PGQ7pvvvE-Y/s1600-h/2014-04-25%25252015.17.17%25255B44%25255D.jpg"><img title="2014-04-25 15.17.17" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="2014-04-25 15.17.17" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-M3RarxLBU9U/U1sjmJzEeyI/AAAAAAAABsE/7UIkD8GzWZU/2014-04-25%25252015.17.17_thumb%25255B15%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="513" height="301" /></a></font></p> <p><font face="Calibri"><font size="4">I used the stitch settings table from the </font><a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2013/05/sewing-journal-pages-pdf-download.html"><font size="4">journal pages</font></a><font size="4"> I did last year, and printed out on card stock, 8 cards to a page in portrait mode. (<font color="#ff0000">For some inexplicable reason it displays as landscape in Google Drive even though on my computer it’s portrait. You should be able to change the orientation yourself, I hope!</font>).</font></font></p> <p><font face="Calibri"><font size="4">Now I can attach the actual stitched fabric samples to the card with all the settings, and the ring keeps them all together. This will be a great reference for when I use the same fabric in the future. And it’ll hang by the machine, so no more hunting.</font></font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">For anyone interested, here’s a link to the <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_MXesBlDFcOWFBuRzRpNzlaazA/edit">serger stitch settings Excel spreadsheet</a>. And now that I think about it, I can probably put this in a Word document as well. Soon!</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"></font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p><font size="4"> </font></p> Steph Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049714887862407863noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8300543955786478892.post-41287486024801215812014-01-29T22:29:00.001-05:002014-01-29T22:34:28.681-05:00A Sewing Room Update<p><font size="3" face="Calibri">Sewing for others has it’s benefits, namely being paid for it! And with the money I earned from the chair and ottoman covers and some other alterations back in September, I immediately put it back in the sewing room, which was really getting out of hand.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Calibri">The main thing I did was replace the fabric storage with the ever popular EXPEDIT shelving from IKEA. I’ve lost count of how many other sewintists have these shelves! They are absolutely great for folded fabric, considerably deeper than standard book shelves. The tall shelves hold a third of the fabric, and other stuff, the majority of the rest (good stuff) is on the shelves under the window.</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ZSQKbEm5H9Q/UunG0UIh3OI/AAAAAAAABoE/YtMbBLpAn2Q/s1600-h/2013-12-09%25252011.13.33%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><font size="3"><img title="2013-12-09 11.13.33" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="2013-12-09 11.13.33" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-mWbbsomJDSQ/UunG1OAnrcI/AAAAAAAABoI/mXZtuMJas-Y/2013-12-09%25252011.13.33_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="540" height="322" /></font></a></p> <p><font face="Calibri"><font size="3">I also decided to get rid of the huge work table I had, which was always half covered with “stuff”. The height of that old table was actually perfect, but I really needed a table to sit at for studying as well. If I really need a higher table for cutting out fabric/tracing patterns I can always use the </font><a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2012/10/home-alone.html"><font size="3">kitchen counter</font></a><font size="3"> which is great for that!</font></font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Calibri">The new arrangement is so much nicer and open, there’s no more bumping into furniture or trying to squeeze through. The mirror on the wall, partly behind the door, is now much more visible and usable.</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Calibri"></font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Calibri"></font></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-69YT_K-5MuM/UunG7IWQkDI/AAAAAAAABoU/cxH5d1Bna24/s1600-h/2013-12_sewing_room_update_collage1%25255B6%25255D.png"><font size="3" face="Calibri"><img title="2013-12_sewing_room_update_collage1" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="2013-12_sewing_room_update_collage1" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-HVoI2pFVPmM/UunG9Ys166I/AAAAAAAABoc/9Kcj4JFT_Us/2013-12_sewing_room_update_collage1_thumb%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="540" height="419" /></font></a></p> <p><font size="3" face="Calibri">I thought I’d have plenty of storage with the 3 EXPEDIT shelving units (4, 8 and 16 cubes), but there’s still stuff laying on the ironing station and on the floor! (My attempts at making a collage need a lot to be desired!)</font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Calibri"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-fjtBoMAddAk/UunHCMBFu9I/AAAAAAAABok/Md91736SYm4/s1600-h/2013-12_sewing_room_update_collage2%25255B3%25255D.png"><img title="2013-12_sewing_room_update_collage2" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="2013-12_sewing_room_update_collage2" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-RQbD9E8WqFU/UunHEoOOowI/AAAAAAAABos/LbtgIZ2Ucsc/2013-12_sewing_room_update_collage2_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="483" height="491" /></a></font></p> <p><font size="3" face="Calibri">And just for the heck of it I did a true panorama shot tonight with the camera in portrait mode – I didn’t think that was even possible. While we were there we checked out the booths at the Expo, and this is where I saw the <a href="http://www.flipbelt.com/">FlipBelt</a> running belt. It is cool! After looking at one for a bit, I wondered if I could make this.</font></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4">The neat thing about this belt is that there are 3 ways you can wear it, I’ve just pictured it here in 2 ways. The third way is to flip it with the slot openings on the inside (first pic) hence the name, so everything is totally secure.</font></p> <p><font size="7"><font face="Calibri"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-9W2xtZeiVOU/UaVpbwC3GHI/AAAAAAAABgA/dcTqDpVH5tM/s1600-h/2013-05-25%252520010%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img alt="My copy of the FlipBelt" border="0" height="423" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-oJGGqTiKO-0/UaVpcaKqjvI/AAAAAAAABgI/n96EBJrMzRg/2013-05-25%252520010_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="My copy of the FlipBelt" width="527" /></a></font> </font></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Z-J_VqIFJ9w/UaVpdBgGPrI/AAAAAAAABgQ/ROJqaLMPREg/s1600-h/2013-05-25%252520011%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="My copy of the FlipBelt" border="0" height="414" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-1xeneQmf8iw/UaVpdhD7-lI/AAAAAAAABgY/jzLs6ARIRSk/2013-05-25%252520011_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="My copy of the FlipBelt" width="529" /></a></font></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4">Right after I got home I went to Fabricland and scoured the place for some really thick polyester knit. I have no idea what else you’d use this stuff for, it’s a pretty bright lemon/lime colour. Not quite as thick as the real FlipBelt, but good enough.</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-AnsKYkDd90c/UaaF0vbsaII/AAAAAAAABio/e8xhl7M_Xus/s1600-h/2013-05-29%252520005%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2013-05-29 005" border="0" height="412" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-DVedUZl_iOE/UaaF1XW0CyI/AAAAAAAABiw/u8S9WijoEu0/2013-05-29%252520005_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2013-05-29 005" width="527" /></a></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4">I also found some dark grey, sturdy, stretchy stuff (nylon?) that feels something like Spanx, it has a high lycra content, stretches well but it’s tight and bounces back quickly. It was the best colour/fabric I could find for the contrast piping. Just look at that shine (left side)! I used the more matte side.</font></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4">Then I spent a few hours thinking about how to make this work!</font></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4">I measured the width of the phone to make sure I made the belt wide enough for the phone to fit inside. I stretched the yellow fabric (across the grain) to see what the stretch ratio was, it seemed to be about 20% -25% or so. For the back piece, I marked a strip 4/5 (or 80%) of my high hip measurement, and the width of the phone plus 5/8 inch or so (depends on how “thick” your phone is). To check the length, I stretched it around myself, it was snug, but not too tight.</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-LQYCmfzdJ9k/UaVpeexBbJI/AAAAAAAABgg/GWzWhpT9n4M/s1600-h/2013-05-25%252520002%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="My copy of the FlipBelt" border="0" height="414" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Qtcip4G5oo4/UaVpeyNIzHI/AAAAAAAABgo/59oarjNFu_s/2013-05-25%252520002_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="My copy of the FlipBelt" width="529" /></a></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4">The contrast piping is just 1 inch strips cut to the same length as the back, again aligned across the grain for max stretch. I pressed them along the length before stitching the sandwich, it helped a lot. The two front pieces are <strike>the width of the back plus 1 inch</strike> <font color="#0000ff">HALF the width of the back plus SEAM ALLOWANCE (3/8 - 1/2 inch)</font> for the seam with the 4 openings/slots. With 4 layers of the fabrics, and a 4 thread overlock stitch set for heavy knit, it worked perfectly. The other seams I stretch-tested took a LOT longer to get the right settings. I also tested a twin needle top-stitching with hand-wound wooly nylon in the bobbin, and loosened needle tension. A cover stitch would be ideal for this application, but as there are only 2 seams here I didn’t feel like converting my serger to cover stitch and then back again to overlock, too kafuffly!</font></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4">The layers are sandwiched:</font></p> <ol> <li><font face="Calibri" size="4">back, RS up</font> </li> <li><font face="Calibri" size="4">contrast piping, folded edge towards the middle of the back, so raw edges are aligned</font> </li> <li><font face="Calibri" size="4">front, RS down, raw edges aligned</font> </li> </ol> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-HTLYi6tKiOQ/UaVphIvBh1I/AAAAAAAABhA/4iQ99dzhl5g/s1600-h/2013-05-25%252520004%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img alt="My copy of the FlipBelt" border="0" height="416" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-0hH0mIW5ZW4/UaVphr_U9fI/AAAAAAAABhI/3lHDxJeIgWs/2013-05-25%252520004_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="My copy of the FlipBelt" width="526" /></a></font></p> <p><font face="Calibri" size="4">I just couldn’t help the top layer slipping like that. So, with 4 openings that’s 12 inches total, then divide the remainder of the band length by 4 to get the length for the closed sections. I marked the openings so that the final connecting seam (ends of the band) would be halfway in one of the closed sections. For my belt, the closed sections would be 5 inches, so I started marking at half this, 2.5 inches from one end, then 3, 5, 3, 5, 3, 5, 3, 2.5. For this seam I just used a small zigzag (width: 0.75, length: 1.5 or so), so it would lay flat. I pressed it hard too!</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-57HtitlE0dI/UaaF2FZjwHI/AAAAAAAABi4/ZZlghxsqACQ/s1600-h/2013-05-29%252520008%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2013-05-29 008" border="0" height="501" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-9dgwudu64Yk/UaaF2RYYhmI/AAAAAAAABjA/mJLuijT98t4/2013-05-29%252520008_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2013-05-29 008" width="369" /></a> </p> <p>Now after stitching the front slotted seam, it looks like a long tube with slot openings. My pink clover chalk pen really left an imprint! Now this is important, all the stitching results in the fabric being stretched, when I measured it, it ended up being about 1/2 inch longer! The best thing to do is wrap it around you and mark where to stitch the ends together.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-shzeoKbCUTY/UaaF3Ly7tyI/AAAAAAAABjI/l_cBWw0fDzs/s1600-h/2013-05-29%252520009%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2013-05-29 009" border="0" height="346" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-a-nypbv6re8/UaaF3n9bPdI/AAAAAAAABjQ/Vw58MsfXz0A/2013-05-29%252520009_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2013-05-29 009" width="252" /></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-rtRyh5m55Ew/UaaF4Kvqx3I/AAAAAAAABjY/3h84OMMgKgg/s1600-h/2013-05-29%252520010%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2013-05-29 010" border="0" height="347" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Lb5iRmuL_x8/UaaF4ZWjrEI/AAAAAAAABjg/EWYVkpsPN4Q/2013-05-29%252520010_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2013-05-29 010" width="256" /></a></p> <p>This is where it’s exactly like the method for making a neck warmer (<a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2012/01/double-layered-neck-warmer-tutorial.html">tutorial here</a> if you ever need one). When I saw the number of participants in MMM’13 I was amazed! It’s fantastic how it’s growing each year. And for that reason I decided to keep it simple and not post daily pictures…well, that and the fact that I just don’t have many me-made clothes yet.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">This month has been an interesting and very useful experiment. I wore me-made things and some thrifted things just about every day. Some of these things were finally fixed or mended! And I did manage to make the 2 new pieces that I pledged this month. I did photograph myself when I wore these, but by the 3rd week I ran out of steam! It was already becoming apparent to me that there were key items missing from my wardrobe, like cardigans and jackets for starters. Bottom pieces too for that matter.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">Anyway, here’s a glimpse of what I managed.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><strong>Week 1:</strong></font></p> <ul> <li><font size="4" face="Calibri">Day 1:  <em><font color="#ff0000">New!</font></em> brown bamboo/cotton BCT from 3hourspast (finished the day before, not blogged yet) with <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2011/04/jeans-are-done.html">Jalie 2908 jeans</a></font></li> <li><font size="4" face="Calibri">Day 2:  <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2012/05/copying-favourite-top-and-variations.html">copy of FILA tank top</a>, hazelnut bamboo/cotton/lycra jersey with black stretch denim thrifted capris</font></li> <li><font size="4" face="Calibri">Day 3:  <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2013/04/day-to-night-top-in-red.html">Maria Denmark Day-to-Night Top</a> with black thrifted capris</font></li> <li><font size="4" face="Calibri">Day 4:  <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2012/05/copying-favourite-top-and-variations.html">copy of FILA tank top</a> in fuscia polyknit, and my mum is wearing the <font color="#ff0000"><em>New!</em></font> burda pants I made this month (yet to blog)</font></li> <li><font size="4" face="Calibri">Day 6:  <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2012/05/ummanother-one.html">Colette Sorbetto #3</a> with another pair of navy stretch denim thrifted capris that were sitting on my mending pile for about 2 years…just needed 2 new buttons</font></li> <li><font size="4" face="Calibri">Day 7:  <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2012/04/burda-skirt-10-2011-119.html">Burda 10-2011 #119 - Skirt</a></font></li> </ul> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-8-y_6dVBPZo/UaULLZmOtpI/AAAAAAAABbw/XQm_keAEHjc/s1600-h/2013-05-01%252520002%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; Lovely, quick top, what’s not to like! Also, uses hardly any fabric.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-H1JOr1XCFL0/UXMCofn7AnI/AAAAAAAABaM/-eRoruIdIMI/s1600-h/2013-03-28%252520020%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-28 020" border="0" alt="2013-03-28 020" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-50EX9dNlY-M/UXMCuGIgjUI/AAAAAAAABaU/KOGbhjCTi7w/2013-03-28%252520020_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="481" height="497" /></a></font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">(It’s hard to take a nice shot with a timer beeping! I get all awkward.) </font><font size="4" face="Calibri">The fabric is leftover from my <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2013/03/pavlova-wrap-top.html">Pavlova top</a>, and still have large bits left. This fabric is lovely to sew with, unbelievably, for a jersey.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">I cut the top according to my bust/waist/hip measurements, so graded between sizes. It really is bang on! I like how it’s snug at the bust, since cowls have a tendency to expose oneself when bending forward. That’s the one thing I don’t much like with cowl tops, but they do look dressier than a plain neckline. This one doesn’t really do that! so *snug* must be the right thing for cowls.<font face="Calibri"><font size="4"></font></font> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Pc0vWqLTtc4/UXMCuuexpRI/AAAAAAAABac/8ahbC8pMPFo/s1600-h/2013-03-28%252520021%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-28 021" border="0" alt="2013-03-28 021" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-98F0WglbjR0/UXMCu9tKmQI/AAAAAAAABak/hLDfJ-_NPQI/2013-03-28%252520021_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="489" height="505" /></a></p> <p>I don’t think I made any alterations to this, but I will next time. The shoulder seams need to be moved forward, they’re too far back on me, but that’s my forward neck tilt. This alt is a standard on all tops, but I couldn’t get my brain around it at the time! The lower back has excess fabric, as usual, so I’m looking into sway back adjustments again. But I’m happy with this, it’s wearable, and there are 2 more pieces of fabric that will soon be made into this top too. I need them for MMM next month.</p> <p>Oh, yeah! I finally wore my Colette beignet skirt the other day, but I’m not happy with the back waist – it sticks out and looks weird. <img style="border-bottom-style: none; border-left-style: none; border-top-style: none; border-right-style: none" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-sadsmile" alt="Sad smile" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-gpTh7hzCaZU/UXMCvXWluyI/AAAAAAAABas/0GeeoXiKalc/wlEmoticon-sadsmile%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" /> I’ll post about it soon (I keep saying that!) so you can see. It needs redoing… ~sniff~ I have to remember: KEEP CALM AND SEW ON!</p> </font></p> Steph Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049714887862407863noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8300543955786478892.post-47258451387127648112013-04-20T16:31:00.001-04:002013-04-20T16:31:21.458-04:00Me-Made-May, I’m IN!<p><font size="4" face="Calibri">I’ve been looking forward to doing <a href="http://sozowhatdoyouknow.blogspot.com/2013/04/me-made-may13-sign-up-here.html">Me-Made-May</a> this year with trepidation! Next time.</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-nSQNB4nbayc/UVhMHrGSUdI/AAAAAAAABZ0/_9gLzU-MK0w/s1600-h/2013-03-31%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-31" border="0" alt="2013-03-31" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-CQVv5Cjkdy0/UVhMITU0WlI/AAAAAAAABZ8/5yOC-fsNsbY/2013-03-31_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="456" height="352" /></a></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">So fabric, I used another piece of fabric from stash, one of two pieces – different colours, same type - bought at the same time with the intention of making the same top. I really like this grey colour, it’s becoming one of my basics, and I like how it goes with other basic colours.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">As to the pattern, I made quite a few alterations. Even though I went with a size 38 for the upper chest/shoulder area it was really loose on my muslin (yes, I did a muslin!) and even when I tried it on too. But I see from the photos (I realize only *now* how this is useful!) that I removed this, and then tried a few different things (I LOVE having a dress form!) and ended up doing a bit of a full bust adjustment. NEVER in my life have I done this before, I never thought I needed it. But it seemed to help reduce the pulling. I have to mention, someone commented to this effect last year on my Sorbetto tops.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Qzk3fH1dUjo/UVZT9ZB9p_I/AAAAAAAABX0/gBmi0ka2he4/s1600-h/2013-03-11%252520006%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-11 006" border="0" alt="2013-03-11 006" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-bFhYSih_zi4/UVZT916M7iI/AAAAAAAABX8/wSIQol44bLc/2013-03-11%252520006_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="265" height="364" /></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-D9KxbhfCBSo/UVZT-rUjj9I/AAAAAAAABYE/PxdDKQiW7aE/s1600-h/2013-03-10%252520005%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-10 005" border="0" alt="2013-03-10 005" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-bK7Q0cWjgis/UVZT-11cO7I/AAAAAAAABYM/TF-jALqGQ8k/2013-03-10%252520005_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="263" height="363" /></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-NvvfqwiupCw/UVZT_rLeGfI/AAAAAAAABYU/7onKhr0clsc/s1600-h/2013-03-11%252520003%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-11 003" border="0" alt="2013-03-11 003" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-P1k2bp_J8w8/UVZT_0KLWuI/AAAAAAAABYc/50T_wdfOYbg/2013-03-11%252520003_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="236" height="320" /></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-K9r1OXRm9Ok/UVZUA026UyI/AAAAAAAABYk/XAbBnd3pLBY/s1600-h/2013-03-11%252520004%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-11 004" border="0" alt="2013-03-11 004" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-GFNQMtPLwGU/UVZUBDXRqlI/AAAAAAAABYs/PPhbCm8P2co/2013-03-11%252520004_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="287" height="222" /></a></font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">I slashed the upper back and raised it, also a standard alteration for my forward tilting neck (photo at left). I just made the top.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><strong>Description:</strong>  Ballet style wrap top in jersey ties at the natural waist while the back tucks into the skirt as a 'muffin cover.' The top is cut all in one piece with the sleeves, which may be cut longer or shorter. The four-piece circle skirt makes optimal use of fabric, zips up the back and features a pintucked patch pocket. A strong, simple, neat double binding finishes the waist edge of the skirt.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><strong>Sizing:</strong> I was on the bottom end of size 35, but went down to a 30 and made some alterations.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><strong>Fabric:</strong>  From the stash. It’s a pretty stretchy cotton/spandex knit from Fabricland, bought over a year ago. I used approximately 1.2 m of 140-ish cm width.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><strong>Alterations:</strong>  Since I went down a size I had to lengthen the top by 1.5 inches, and increase the circumference of the sleeves by 1 inch. I ended up lengthening the top in 2 places, splitting the increase, and the higher increase also incorporated the sleeve width increase.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><strong>Likes/Dislikes:</strong>  I do like this top, especially the back ‘muffin cover’! It’s very comfortable to wear. </font><font size="4" face="Calibri">But because this top stops just at/below the waist, it is best worn with skirts/pants that are waist high (unless you don’t mind exposing your belly!) I don’t have any high-waisted pants or jeans, just a couple of skirts.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">Steam-a-Seam!! I’d never used this before, can you believe it? It’s amazing stuff! This made sewing the loooong front facing so easy, as NO pins were required.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><strong>Notes:</strong>  The neckband application is a bit unusual, and I stared at the instructions for quite some time (other participants mentioned the same thing). Steph C (the designer) <a href="http://sewingcake.com/lapped-neck-seam-visual-reference-pavlova/">added more photos and tips</a> during the sewalong, which were invaluable in figuring it out!</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">There are a few things that need tweaking: the sleeves need to be longer OR shorter, they’re right ON my elbow and it’s rather annoying. Another 1/2 inch added to the sleeve width would also make it more comfortable. I’d probably also add another inch to the body length, so it’s not so snug on my shoulders.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><strong>Conclusion:</strong>  I’d probably make one more top in another colour, maybe two more. I just like having multiples of the same things! It would be interesting to make this in a slightly warmer/thicker fabric, as long as it has great drape. I’m just a bit concerned with the amount of fabric at the waist, it’s not a place where I need more bulk! Merino wool knit sounds fabulous, I just don’t know where to find this in Canada.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">One thing I have realized is that I won’t be making the skirt. There’s a lot of fabric there, and being the pear shape I am, it will only make me look more so!</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">So there you have it! I have been quite busy sewing and there are two more finished objects: a ruched-raglan sleeve Burda top 02/2013 #127 and the Colette beignet skirt. You’ll be able to see those next time.</font></p> Steph Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049714887862407863noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8300543955786478892.post-23244945317463970642013-03-15T22:42:00.001-04:002013-03-15T22:50:55.335-04:00Burda 09-2010-121 Top – Revisited<p><font color="#cccccc" size="1" face="Calibri"><a href="</font><a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/blog/3737204/?claim=ty3rhs7dbzs""><font color="#cccccc" size="1" face="Calibri">http://www.bloglovin.com/blog/3737204/?claim=ty3rhs7dbzs"</font></a><font size="4" face="Calibri"><font color="#cccccc" size="1">>Follow my blog with Bloglovin</a></font> </font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">So Google Reader will be no more in 3 months  :(   I am attempting to “claim” my blog at Bloglovin, and as of yet I have NO idea what that means, but it seems important. Ever since my <a href="http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2010/10/burda-09-2010-121-top.html">first post on the Burda top</a>, there has been a steady flow of readers to it from 2 bloggers (that I can see from googling) as they have mentioned it in their post and provided links. I have to say a huge thank you to them for believing that what I wrote made sense! Anyway, even when I wrote the post, I felt that the photos of how I sewed the neck were too small. Last year I started to add the text to the images, and finally republished the post. </font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ORCgzcVcsnc/UUPcKVxGjZI/AAAAAAAABUs/Uwho0mmL5B4/s1600-h/2010-10-06%252520001%252520-%252520with%252520text%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2010-10-06 001 - with text" border="0" alt="2010-10-06 001 - with text" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-zqNjflHoNT0/UUPcLftKZbI/AAAAAAAABU0/22RXzyC9ZlY/2010-10-06%252520001%252520-%252520with%252520text_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="514" height="397" /></a></font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">Bigger pictures with text and arrows pointing to key things are so much better! I can’t decide which buttons to put on the skirt. The top buttons are the ones I initially got for the other cotton twill wearable muslin that failed. I went back for more ideas and came back with the other three. (Sorry, this fabric is tricky to photograph, and my lighting is horrible!)</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-9EZCMZeBhX0/UTgcW1y2tjI/AAAAAAAABQs/Wq75DnkGoD4/s1600-h/2013-03-06%25252022.38.13%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-06 22.38.13" border="0" alt="2013-03-06 22.38.13" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-kHNAQ384Mx8/UTgcXS5pHdI/AAAAAAAABQ0/kSA2CuzAZWM/2013-03-06%25252022.38.13_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="509" height="707" /></a></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">Now, on a side note, as you can see, I managed to do the buttonholes after all! I was in a bit of a panic about the buttonholes. Eventually I <strike>stopped being silly</strike> just tried one. To my utter astonishment, the buttonholes actually went in a breeze! I really was not anticipating this at all. My machine did some pretty decent buttonholes, especially with some thick thread under the stitches, sort of corded.</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-RhEM9hfxXOc/UTgcYr_yFKI/AAAAAAAABQ8/rU291V_bgVc/s1600-h/2013-03-05%25252015.07.03%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-05 15.07.03" border="0" alt="2013-03-05 15.07.03" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-5RzygeXIp5s/UTgcZXMLnrI/AAAAAAAABRE/TpLptUYc148/2013-03-05%25252015.07.03_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="488" height="669" /></a></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">I also tested my old Greist buttonholer attachment, and found that they looked best when stitched around twice, with a larger stitch on the second round. I have reached that stage where you tell yourself to just get on with it!</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">This is it right now, with the hem half sewn. (I am so relieved with how invisible it seems to be.)</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-IgBYWjgrgKM/UTQqtIPmJvI/AAAAAAAABPM/ZyhE1grZE5k/s1600-h/2013-03-03%25252023.18.55%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-03-03 23.18.55" border="0" alt="2013-03-03 23.18.55" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-iLdwjrDmRDg/UTQqtUv8c3I/AAAAAAAABPU/1NNcd_pzF6w/2013-03-03%25252023.18.55_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="348" height="472" /></a> </p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">But it’s the buttonholes that’s got me in a panic. Should I have made bound or corded buttonholes? They’d be stronger and look really neat, but it’s way too late for them now.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">After much googling and searching for tips, clues, ANYthing on making buttonholes on corduroy, I found this post by <a href="http://vickikatemakes.wordpress.com/2011/11/22/feel-the-fear-and-sew/">Vicki Kate Makes on her own beignet</a>. Holy crap, her buttonholes turned out FANTASTIC!! And they’re machine-made.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">The buttons were originally meant for my wearable muslin, but the heavy cotton twill fabric from IKEA (a neighbours old curtains) ended up being ripped ON the seam due to a nicked machine needle. ARRRGGGGG!</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-xO9q3zPujN8/UTSwtnZZl_I/AAAAAAAABQU/yIoLlAFMUZs/s1600-h/2013-02-13%252520001%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-02-13 001" border="0" alt="2013-02-13 001" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-P3Wswu-MLEI/UTSwuBamVGI/AAAAAAAABQc/mBP3PRbBMtw/2013-02-13%252520001_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="368" height="285" /></a></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">So, they’ll go on this make instead. Part 3 is basically finished, the two halves are reattached and the exterior padding has been augmented to resemble my shape a bit more! All it needs now is a skin!</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-u-LGfgVZfT0/USPHMreLi-I/AAAAAAAABJU/6-o1MoLhiUY/s1600-h/2013-02-05-0066.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-02-05 006" border="0" alt="2013-02-05 006" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-jBPupI23t6E/USPHM_prQkI/AAAAAAAABJc/QH-lyFRMjBI/2013-02-05-006_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" width="266" height="370" /></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-v2JczGAYdNk/USPHNTJk1oI/AAAAAAAABJk/J5E6w3wu-wU/s1600-h/2013-02-05-0079.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-02-05 007" border="0" alt="2013-02-05 007" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-s3mtJdYtXtE/USPHQe11oNI/AAAAAAAABJs/eOkSiJJjAiM/2013-02-05-007_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" width="240" height="370" /></a></font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">This is turning out a bit harder than I thought; to find a fabric to cover the form. The stretchy fleece I had lined up turned out to be to “sticky”; it’s hard to slip something over that stuff. Something more slippery would work better. I even toyed with the idea to make a cover using real muslin. That might be tricky though, as when I’d started to drape it and found myself having to pin out all kinds of darts! The neckline sits pretty well on the front and back.</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-jNSVPtoaUkc/USeJDm-5LUI/AAAAAAAABN0/INfc6REKIo0/s1600-h/2013-02-20%25252009.07.41%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-02-20 09.07.41" border="0" alt="2013-02-20 09.07.41" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-k9j-zFbrkF0/USeJEPsErYI/AAAAAAAABN8/tuXukSRBY8g/2013-02-20%25252009.07.41_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="261" height="363" /></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/--LRqG8aV_-s/USeJFXxZPTI/AAAAAAAABOE/izTIxZ-1RsY/s1600-h/2013-02-20%25252009.08.18%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-02-20 09.08.18" border="0" alt="2013-02-20 09.08.18" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-FrQbjzcNm6g/USeJF45_ziI/AAAAAAAABOM/cJh_2Kytb_A/2013-02-20%25252009.08.18_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="258" height="364" /></a></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">And here’s the telling shot about the bottom edge of the front, look how it sticks out! It was actually great, as I needed some time outside in the snow with my boys!</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">Anyway, this bucket bag is made following the Craftsy course, <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/class/bag-making-basics-drawstring-bag-and-bucket-bag/149">Bag-Making Basics: Drawstring Bag & Bucket Bag</a>. It’s FREE! This little bag is neat. It stays open, and that’s exactly what I wanted for my knitting.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-n27jKAv5QnU/USWRgGSAYYI/AAAAAAAABLQ/ytQs7lHndvM/s1600-h/Bucket%252520Bag%252520%2525231%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="Bucket Bag #1" border="0" alt="Bucket Bag #1" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-2P6RU_k8_aY/USWRg9ldkLI/AAAAAAAABLY/K9TQ5WVCjqQ/Bucket%252520Bag%252520%2525231_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="481" height="660" /></a></font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">I bought this fabric from a new shop here in Ottawa, called <a href="http://fabricationsottawa.com/">Fabrications</a></font><font size="4" face="Calibri">*. They’ve got some lovely organic cottons, it feels so soft and is fabulous to sew with. I bought 1/2 meter of 3 pieces, and had plenty for 3 different little sewing projects (with leftover). These will make a nice break from the long projects.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">Now I just need to find some real fusible fleece, which the pattern calls for. I could only find fusible batting, and it’s not quite right for this, too thick. But, it turned out well enough, and I love the fabric colours.</font></p> <p><font size="4" face="Calibri">Oh, here’s a few pics from last weekend. Can’t resist!<font face="Calibri"><font size="4"></font></font> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-S_K8d0LgcbY/USWRhjpci-I/AAAAAAAABLg/0gZJLdOzHHQ/s1600-h/2013-02-16%252520005%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="2013-02-16 005" border="0" alt="2013-02-16 005" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Ogt8K92jPnE/USWRiUXM5SI/AAAAAAAABLo/tjEHrxQj5nI/2013-02-16%252520005_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="352" height="478" /></a></p> <p>The deer were on the front lawn after dinner! This is one of the new shops that now stocks her Sewaholic patterns. Great news for around here, as I don’t know of any other shops that carry such a variety of (non-quilting) indie patterns . They also carry patterns by Colette, Amy Butler, Megan Nielsen, Oliver + S, and some others I’ve never seen before or read about.</em></font></p> Steph Ahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00049714887862407863noreply@blogger.com4
